The Kentucky Chapter of the American College of Cardiology (KYACC) and the Western Kentucky Heart and Lung Research Foundation and Educational Trust (WKHL) will bring together cardiovascular healthcare providers and industry leaders from across the state for the 16th Annual Conference & Scientific Session. While we are disappointed that we will not be able to meet in-person this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are excited about the opportunities presented by a virtual platform!
The Virtual 16th Annual Conference & Scientific Session is an excellent opportunity for cardiovascular healthcare providers to get together for an annual update and learn more about topics relevant to cardiovascular medicine. This program is designed for physicians, cardiac care associates, cardiovascular pharmacists, echo sonographers, nurses, or other practitioners with an emphasis on current practice trends within cardiovascular medicine.
Presidental Speaker: Vivek Y. Reddy, MD
Vivek Y. Reddy, MD is Director of Cardiac Arrhythmia Services for The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Mount Sinai Health System, and The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust Professor of Medicine in Cardiac Electrophysiology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Reddy is one of the nation’s premier cardiac electrophysiologists, leading a team of physician-scientists who are developing and testing advanced therapies for cardiac arrhythmias – including atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardias, the most common cause of sudden cardiac death. His team offers the full spectrum of arrhythmia therapies. Dr. Reddy’s pioneering clinical research is changing the way cardiac patients are treated and cured. Under his leadership, Mount Sinai is the lead investigator on several multinational clinical trials exploring new arrhythmia procedures and technologies.
In addition, in 2014 Dr. Reddy implanted inside a patient's heart the world’s first miniature leadless pacemaker in the United States at The Mount Sinai Hospital.
Honorable Maestro Speaker: Meryl S. Cohen, MD
Meryl S. Cohen, MD, is a board-certified pediatric cardiologist in the Cardiac Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) with expertise in fetal, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. In addition to her clinical work, she serves as the director of the CHOP Cardiology Fellowship Training program and is an Associate Chief of the Division of Cardiology. Dr. Cohen’s career in pediatric cardiology grew from a deep interest in the anatomy and physiology of the heart, combined with a passion for taking care of children. According to Cohen, openness and honesty play a large part in her approach. "I try to make sure my patients have a complete understanding of their disease. It’s very important they know what to expect in both the near and distant future."
Communication is also an important part of how she works with the team at the CHOP Cardiac Center to diagnose and treat patients with complex forms of congenital heart disease. "I enjoy figuring out the puzzle of their disease and working collaboratively with my colleagues on ways to provide the best possible care. Teaching and mentoring are primary roles as well. Helping to foster the careers of young trainees is essential to our mission."
As a researcher, Dr. Cohen focuses on understanding growth in children with congenital heart disease. "In particular," she says, "I am working on the risk, timing and cause of obesity in children with heart disease, and how to prevent it. I also use echocardiography (a form of cardiac ultrasound) as a tool to predict outcomes for various forms of congenital heart disease."
ACC Speaker: Laxmi Mehta, MD
Dr. Laxmi Mehta is a non-invasive cardiologist, professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, director of the Lipid Clinics and section director of Preventative Cardiology and Women’s Cardiovascular Health at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. She specializes in women’s cardiovascular health, prevention and cardiac imaging. Dr. Mehta is an avid promoter, educator and media spokesperson on both prevention and women’s cardiovascular health.
Dr. Mehta’s clinical and research interests include obstructive and non-obstructive coronary artery disease in women. In addition to her clinical research, she has published a number of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Dr. Mehta served as the first female president of the Ohio chapter of the American College of Cardiology and is a member of several committees within the organization.
Dr. Mehta previously served as president of the metro Columbus Board of Directors for the American Heart Association (AHA) and as a member of their Great Rivers Affiliate Board and is currently the chair of the AHA’s Cardiovascular Disease in Women and Special Populations Committee.
Additionally, she chaired the American Heart Association’s first ever scientific statement on acute myocardial infarction in women as well as their first statement on breast cancer and cardiovascular disease.
