JACC Leadership Page: Opioid Crisis Impacting More Than Just Patients

In a new Leadership Page published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Richard J. Kovacs, MD, FACC, Jason H. Gilbert, PHD, MBA, RN, NEA-BC and William J. Oetgen, MD, MBA, FACC, discuss the issues that clinicians, hospitals and practices are facing in light of the opioid crisis. Opioid use can affect a patient’s relationship with the health care system. Programs need to be designed to care for infective endocarditis caused by injection drug use but doing so may be complicated by the societal stigmatization of addiction. Opioid-related claims are a common cause of litigation and medical practitioners treating these patients often face burnout. It is more important than ever to screen patients for risk, document family history and educate patients, families and providers about risks and treatment options. Read more
